SWAMI AND FRIENDS
-R.K NARAYAN
CHARECTER OF SWAMINATHAN:
Swami appears to be a major character in this story. Swaminathan is a true friend of Mani. He is timid and simple by nature. He forbids his friends to engage in criminal act. Swaminathan is most pleasing when he express his delights at the happy reunion of Rajam and Mani.
CHARACTER OF MANI:
He is one of the backbenchers in the class first A. He is irregular in attendance. But he is fond of dominating the whole class with his muscle power. He appears to be the hero of the class. Mani considered Rajam as enemy. Mani is superstitious,he is afraid of ghost. Finally, he shows intelligence to accept Rajam's friendship.
CHARACTER OF RAJAM:
Rajam is more smart and matured than Mani. He possess acharming personality. He has self respect. Rajam is academically sincere, yet he never spares Mani's tendency of domination. Rajam has nobility also to give Mani an oppotunity to settle with him. H e justifies everything with reason.
An enjoyable read Swami and Friends by R. K. Narayan . loved the way you wrote it. I find your review very genuine and original, this book is going in by "to read" list.

whaddya think about this?
ReplyDeleteHe is a very naughty yet innocent boy. Unlike other childrens of today, he has a very vivid imagination. He studies in Albert mission school in class two. An example of his imagination and innocence is when he is given a sum to solve. The sum is as follows:-
Rama has 3 mangoes with which he wants to earn fifteen annas. Krishna wants only four mangoes. How much will Krishna have to pay?
Now that’s when we see an example of his innocence and imagination when he wonders whether the mangoes were ripe or not. He felt that if the mangoes were ripe fifteen annas was not a proper price. And when his father grew violent because swami was not able to solve the sum Swami wondered that if it was so urgent for the father to find the price of mangoes he’d better go to the market of find it out instead of harassing him. He belongs to a middle class south Indian family. His best friends are Mani and Rajam and unlike any other child he is very attached to his friends and likes to hang out with his friends. He is a part loafer and likes to play a lot and sometimes gets in all kinds of trouble. He does not like to study and believes that holidays are totally meant for flay and fun. I feel that the phrase “all work and no play makes SWAMI a dull boy” fits him very well. He also lies a lot and keeps thinking of new ways to creep out of problems. He is very careless and irresponsible.
